Uber, Hyundai team up to launch future Uber Air Taxis.

The leading ride-hailing company Uber has partnered with Hyundai Motor Company to develop ‘Uber Air Taxis’, with Hyundai being the first automotive company to join the Uber Elevate initiative.

With a goal of flight demonstrations in 2020 and Elevate commercially available to riders in 2023, Uber has teamed up with Hyundai to offer future aerial ride share network through the air vehicle concept as a part through Uber’s open design process.

Upon this new cooperation, Hyundai will be responsible for producing as well as deploying the air vehicles, while Uber will handle airspace support services, connections to ground transportation, and customer interfaces through the future “aerial ride share network”.

The new full-scale aircraft concept was revealed by Hyundai during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), with the company’s aim to bring “automotive-scale manufacturing capability and a track record of mass-producing electric vehicles.”

Commenting on this new partnership, executive vice president and head of Hyundai’s Urban Air Mobility (UAM) division, Jaiwon Shin, said: “We expect UAM to vitalise urban communities and provide more quality time to people. We are confident that Uber Elevate is the right partner to make this innovative product readily available to as many customers as possible.”

Meanwhile, the head of Uber Elevate, Eric Allison, commented: “Hyundai is our first vehicle partner with experience of manufacturing passenger cars on a global scale.”

He further added, “Combining Hyundai’s manufacturing muscle with Uber’s technology platform represents a giant leap forward for launching a vibrant air taxi network in the coming years.”

To prepare for this partnership announcement, Hyundai and Uber Elevate has jointly developed a PAV (Personal Air Vehicle) model, S-A1, which utilises innovative design processes for the purpose of optimising electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for aerial ridesharing purposes.
