The Salalah International Airport is being readied and Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC) has invited tenders to design, supply and install bench seating at the gate lounges and public areas of the Airport.
Besides this, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, which is overseeing the multi-billion dollar modernization of the country's airports and aviation sector, has also invited tenders for supplying air-field lighting mobile workshop for the Muscat International Airport (Phase 1) and the Salalah Airport.
Talking to Times of Oman, a senior official of OAMC said, "All these developments are part of the construction of the new airport at Muscat and Salalah."
While the new Muscat International Airport will have a capacity to handle 12 million passengers, Salalah is expected to handle two million passengers. According to World Travel and Tourism Council, Oman tourism industry represents seven per cent of Oman's total GDP, or $ 5.3 billion — and this figure is expected to grow to $ 9.7 billion by 2023.
Smart Design Group, headquartered in Vancouver, is handling the commercial planning for the two new airports.Once ready, the OAMC plans to attract airlines from around the world. "As and when the new airports open in Muscat and Salalah, the OAMC will be expected to attract more airlines and increase the frequencies to these airports as they will have a higher capacity," the official said.
The OAMC is not focusing on any one specific market to grow, but is seeking to attract airlines from various regions such as Asia, Middle East, Africa, Europe and the United States.
It may be recalled that 72 per cent of the work on the new Muscat International Airport has already been completed while work at the Salalah's new airport is complete to the extent of 85 per cent.
