“Substantial” damage for Qatar Airways plane after collision.

A Qatar Airways aircraft suffered “substantial” damage after hitting a runway’s lighting system during take-off in Miami, according to a US government report.

The Boeing 777-300, whose registration number is A7-BAC, was able to continue its flight to Doha on 15 September “without incident”, said the report, despite the damage to the underside of the vehicle.

The report, published by the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) said that the aircraft struck the Approach Lighting System – a series of masts located 60 meters beyond the end of the runway.

Only six metres off the ground, the lights are normally out of reach of planes passing at an altitude of several hundred feet, but on this occasion the Boeing’s underbelly was low enough to strike the masts.

The airport published a notice to airmen (NOTAM) saying that the lighting system on that runway would be out of service for a month.
