Women to work as security guards at Parliament

Having women guards at the National Assembly has come to be a necessity amid the security conditions and developments in the country, an official said yesterday. Opening the door for female volunteers to join the parliament’s guards, for the first time, aims to cope with changes that prompt developing the security system, Assistant Secretary General for National Assembly Security Guard Affairs Major General Khaled Al- Waqeet said in a statement.

Their duties will include inspecting and frisking women, both staff and visitors, Waqeet said, noting that the new Assembly building that will be opened in six months’ time will provide all the needs of the woman guards.

In line with directives by Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanem, coordination meetings have been held with Interior Ministry officials to set the mechanisms and conditions for volunteers to join the guard force, he said. Women started joining the ministry seven years ago. The deadline for those willing to apply for a guard at the parliament is August.
